Public Moorings

The Department of Environment has emplaced several hundred moorings around the Cayman Islands, most on popular dive sites, for the use of the public. This is a list of the location of these moorings as well as information on their proper use.

Our thanks to Sunset House Divers for having web-enabled this information and allowing us to link to their site. If you have any questions about the moorings, please do not hesitate to contact the Department of Environment.

Coastal Works Licensing

Any "development" work that occurs in the water requires a Coastal Works Licence issued by the Cabinet through the Ministry of Environment. The Department of Environment accts as an advisor to Government regarding such works. Persons wishing to apply for Coastal Works permission will find everything they need to move through the process in the above guide.

FAOLex
The Legal Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has scanned and put online a number of the Cayman Islands laws relating to environmental matters. Simply go to their website (linked above) and search for "Cayman".

For up to date information on the Marine Laws we advise people to use our Marine Parks Brochure (see section above) rather than wadeing through the laws themselves. Also, the legislation posted on FAOLex may be incomplete. For persons wishing up to date copies of all local legislation please contact the Department directly and we can advise you how these may be obtained.

Draft National Conservation Bill

The National Conservation Bill has been tabled in the Legislative Assembly by the Honourable Charles Clifford, Minister for Environment. The public is encouraged to review the legislation and provide their opinions on it. The above link contains background information and a copy of the draft Bill itself. The Department is more than happy to answer any questions about the proposed legislation.

Wildlife Interaction Zones
Wildlife Interaction Zones (WIZ’s) have now been added to the Marine Parks Regulations. They are particularly concerned with the management of Stingray City and the Sandbar, as well as the prohibition of fish feeding in areas of Cayman waters other than designated WIZ’s. The link (above) will take you to the Minister’s statement on these Zones as well as a copy of the new Regulations (at the bottom of that page). Enforcement of these Regulations began in late 2007. The Department encourages everyone to familiarise themselves with these new Regulations and to contact the department if they have any questions.
Marine Conservation Laws Online
Copies the actual Marine Conservation Law and Marine Park & WIZ Regulations are available online from the Department's page on the Government Web Portal.
